SPEECH SUMMARY:
The talk will address both the design and use of blockchain-based systems from a multidisciplinary perspective. It will consider the viewpoints of different stakeholders, including developers, managers, users, and policymakers.
Developing and deploying blockchain-based systems requires a holistic understanding of social, technical, and legal considerations. The talk will therefore explore how these perspectives interact and influence the responsible, trustworthy, and lawful design and use of blockchain technologies.
Finally, the talk will outline a future research agenda, highlighting key research opportunities and challenges from technological, organizational, societal, and regulatory perspectives.
SPEAKER RESUME:
Najmul Islam is a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Software Engineering at LUT University, Finland. He won the award of Finnish IS Scientist of the Year in 2022 and the LUT Foundation Award in 2024. He has led multi-million-euro research projects funded by Horizon Europe, the Research Council of Finland, Business Finland, and EU Chist-Era, among others. He is an adjunct professor of IS at Tampere University, Finland. He received his PhD from the University of Turku, Finland, and M.Sc. from Tampere University of Technology, Finland. He has published in highly ranked journals such as Journal of Strategic Information Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, Information Systems Journal, IEEE Transactions of Industrial Informatics (TII), IEEE Transactions of Artificial Intelligence, Computers in Industry, Computers & Education, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, International Journal of Information Management, Information Technology & People, Computers in Human Behavior, Internet Research, Communications of the AIS, among others. He is currently serving as a Senior Editor for Information Technology & People journal, and Board member of the Scandinavian Chapter of the AIS (IRIS) association.
